Sweaters: preparation and drying checklist

Tick off each check as you go. Follow your item’s complete care label and the product and machine instructions. These checks do not set washing temperatures or grant drying permission.

Treat the knit structure as part of the care decision

A sweater is a constructed garment, not a single fibre. Cotton, wool, cashmere and synthetic blends can all be knitted into light, open stitches or dense, heavy shapes. Check the finished sweater’s instructions and protect shoulders, cuffs and details from pulling under its wet weight.

Before the sweater gets wet

Machine wash, hand wash or professional care?

Use the method the label actually permits. A wool cycle is not automatically suitable for every sweater, and washing by hand does not make a non-washable item washable. Ask the maker if the instructions are missing.

Any loose loops or delicate details?

Inspect open stitches, buttons, trim and existing snags before cleaning. Keep hooks and rough items away from the knit. If the maker recommends a wash bag, use it with the permitted process; it cannot protect a sweater from an otherwise prohibited treatment.

What drying support is required?

Read the drying instruction before filling a basin. For dry-flat knitwear, prepare a clean towel or suitable mesh surface large enough for the body and sleeves. Do not leave sleeves hanging over an edge where their wet weight can pull them longer.

Pills, a snag or a change of shape?

Surface pills do not call for harder scrubbing, and a pulled loop should not be cut automatically. Follow the maker’s surface-care guidance or seek repair advice for damage.

Put the instructions into practice

  1. Prepare the garment and drying space

Follow instructions for fastenings and turning inside out, then choose compatible detergent for the fibre and washing method. Set up the specified drying arrangement now so you will not carry a dripping sweater around by its shoulders later.

  2. Use the permitted movement

For machine washing, match cycle and temperature and respect load guidance. For hand washing, use gentle movement and rinse as directed. Avoid pulling the body through your hands, hard rubbing or twisting the sleeves to remove water.

  3. Lift with the weight supported

Gather the sweater and support its body and sleeves together as you transfer it. Remove excess water only by a method its instructions allow. Do not lift a heavy wet knit by its collar, cuffs or one shoulder.

  4. Arrange, dry and put away

For flat drying, place it in its natural shape, ease out folds and keep the whole garment supported. Avoid stretching it to a desired size. Check thicker ribs before storage, and fold knitwear that could distort on a hanger once completely dry.
