Cashmere care: gentle cleaning, pilling and storage
Choose the permitted cleaning method for cashmere, handle pills gently, support knitwear during drying and store it without stretching.
Cleaning and surface care are different jobs
Cashmere can develop small surface pills where loose fibres tangle during wear. Those pills are not an instruction to wash harder. Start by separating the jobs: follow the label for cleaning, use the maker’s advice for surface care, and support knitwear during drying and storage. Woven cashmere and knitted cashmere can require different treatment, even from the same manufacturer.
Choose the right kind of care
Is home washing actually allowed?
Read the complete finished item’s label. Some cashmere knitwear permits hand washing; other items specify professional cleaning. Neither the word cashmere nor a machine’s wool program grants washing permission. If the label is missing, ask the maker before wetting it.
Are you seeing pills or a pulled thread?
Small balls on the surface differ from a loose loop or damaged stitch. Follow the maker’s guidance for a suitable cashmere comb and gentle use on a supported surface. Do not tug at attached fibres or cut an uncertain thread; ask for repair advice if needed.
Is the detergent appropriate?
When washing is permitted, choose a detergent suitable for cashmere and the stated method, at the product’s dose. A strong stain treatment is not a substitute for suitable detergent. Respect bleach restrictions and avoid improvising a soaking mixture for a stubborn mark.
Is there space to dry and store it?
For flat-dry knitwear, prepare a supported surface before washing. Once completely dry, folding helps avoid the stretching that hanging can cause. Store clean, dry knitwear in a suitable dry place; inspect it periodically rather than relying on a scented product to guarantee protection.
Put the instructions into practice
1
Inspect the item before cleaning
Read all the instructions and check for loose stitches or snags. Address surface pills only using the method the maker recommends. Do not run a comb repeatedly over thin or damaged areas in an effort to make every part look new.
2
Follow the permitted cleaning route
For hand-washable cashmere, use the labelled temperature and suitable detergent with gentle pressing movements. Rinse as directed. Do not rub, wring or stretch the fabric. For professional-care-only pieces, take the care instructions with the item instead of attempting a basin wash.
3
Support the wet knitwear
Lift the garment with its weight supported. Where permitted, gently press out excess water and place flat-dry knitwear in its natural shape on a clean towel or suitable drying surface. Keep it away from direct heat; do not pull the sleeves to force a length.
4
Put it away only when fully dry
Check thicker cuffs and seams before folding. Store knitwear without loading it onto narrow hangers. If you notice a hole, snag or persistent change in shape, seek suitable repair advice rather than treating another wash as a restoration method.
Avoid these mistakes
Do not use a hand-wash routine for cashmere labelled dry clean only.
Do not pull pills or loose loops until they break away.
Do not hang heavy wet knitwear or use direct heat to accelerate drying.
Turn your label into a checklist
Choose the marks actually printed on your item. Keep the complete instructions together, then copy or print your checklist.
