A towel load needs room to move

Towels can shed lint, hold a lot of water and dry unevenly when packed together. A useful routine starts with a compatible load and ends with checking thick edges before folding. Bath towels, quick-drying travel towels and decorative hand towels may need different settings. Read each finished item’s label rather than choosing one hot wash for everything called a towel.

Four checks for this towel load

Which towels belong together?

Group compatible colours and care instructions. Keep lint-shedding terry towels away from lint-catching synthetic fabrics and delicate clothing. A new towel may shed noticeably; follow its maker’s first-wash directions instead of adding it to a load of sheets.

Do the details change the care?

Read instructions for embroidery, edging and other trim as well as the main fabric. Do not infer bleach permission from a white colour or cotton composition. If a label is missing, recover the product’s directions before choosing a wash or additive.

How much detergent is appropriate?

Use a suitable detergent at its stated dose for the load, soil and water conditions, following the washer manual. More detergent can leave residue. Check the towel maker’s softener guidance too: some products reduce absorbency, so extra softener is not an automatic solution to roughness.

Can the load dry evenly?

A thick bath sheet and a lightweight hand towel need not finish together. Check the permitted drying method and machine capacity. A setting named towels does not override a low-heat limit or a do-not-tumble-dry instruction.

Put the instructions into practice

  1. Sort and inspect

Check labels and separate incompatible items. Look for loose loops or snagging trim before loading; do not pull at a loose thread. Keep items requiring different treatment out of this load, even when their colours match.

  2. Load loosely and measure

Place towels in the washer using its loading directions, without pressing down to fit extra pieces. Add the measured detergent through the correct dispenser or dosing method. Split the load if the towels cannot move as the manual requires.

  3. Wash within the labels’ limits

Choose a compatible cycle and temperature, then check the final controls before starting. Use only permitted additives. If towels repeatedly feel coated or stiff, review dosing and loading rather than escalating heat or mixing household cleaning products.

  4. Open out, dry and check

Unbunch the washed towels and use their permitted drying method. Maintain the dryer’s lint filter as its manual directs. Check thick hems and any folded areas before putting towels away; continue an allowed drying method for damp pieces instead of raising heat beyond the label.
