How to wash silk when the care label permits it

Check whether your silk item can be washed, choose suitable detergent, handle it gently and follow its drying and ironing restrictions.

Washable silk and dry-clean-only silk need different plans

A washable silk pillowcase is not a care template for every silk dress, scarf or blouse. Read the finished item’s instructions before applying water, detergent or heat. Where washing is permitted, gentle handling and the correct drying method matter as much as choosing a low temperature. Keep the whole label in view as you make the plan.

Check these four points first

Does the label permit home washing?

Use the stated hand- or machine-wash method. If it says dry clean only, follow that instruction. If washing instructions are missing, confirm them with the manufacturer rather than testing a whole garment in a basin.

Is the detergent suitable for silk?

Select a product explicitly suitable for silk and the chosen washing method; follow its directions and the item’s restrictions. Silk manufacturers commonly recommend a gentle, enzyme-free detergent. Do not substitute bleach, an all-purpose stain remover or a household cleaning mixture.

What could catch or rub?

Follow the maker’s preparation instructions for fastenings and turning items inside out. A suitable mesh bag can protect machine-washable silk when recommended, but it does not make a prohibited cycle safe. Avoid a load containing rough or snagging items.

How must it dry and be finished?

Read the drying and ironing instructions separately. Do not assume low-heat tumbling or steam is allowed. For silk that permits air drying, follow the stated flat or hanging method and any shade requirement. A dryer setting named delicate is not permission.

Put the instructions into practice

  1. Prepare the permitted wash

For hand washing, use a clean basin and water at the temperature specified by the item. For machine washing, select the stated cycle and temperature. Measure the suitable detergent instead of adding extra because the garment feels delicate.

  2. Keep handling gentle

For a hand-wash item, move the silk gently through the water without rubbing, pulling or twisting it. Keep within any stated soaking limit. If a mark remains, get advice appropriate to that item instead of scrubbing harder.

  3. Rinse and remove water carefully

Follow the wash and detergent directions for rinsing. Support the item as you lift it. Where the manufacturer permits, press with a clean towel to remove moisture rather than wringing. Keep rough edges and jewellery away from the fabric.

  4. Dry, then check the finishing instruction

Arrange the item using its permitted drying method and keep it away from direct heat. If ironing is permitted, obey the labelled heat and steam restrictions. Let the item finish drying before storing it; do not fold it away damp.

Avoid these mistakes

Turn your label into a checklist

Choose the marks actually printed on your item. Keep the complete instructions together, then copy or print your checklist.
