How to wash nylon and protect coatings and delicate fabric

Read nylon and polyamide care labels, distinguish ordinary fabric from coated outerwear, and plan washing and drying without guessing.

Nylon describes a fibre, not a waterproofing system

A fine nylon layer and a nylon-faced rain shell can need very different care. Nylon is a type of polyamide, so you may see either name on clothing information. Look beyond that fibre name to the finished item’s label: coatings, membranes, linings and stretch fibres can change the washing and drying instructions.

Identify the construction before choosing a wash

Is it coated or laminated?

For weatherproof clothing, use the maker’s instructions for that exact product. Detergent, rinsing and finish-care directions may differ from ordinary nylon. A nylon fibre label does not establish that an item is waterproof or identify a compatible reproofing treatment.

Could another item catch the fabric?

Fine fabric and exposed hooks are an unhelpful combination. Follow the maker’s guidance for fastening closures and using a protective wash bag. Separate incompatible items; a bag cannot make a machine-prohibited item machine washable.

What do the wash instructions allow?

Choose the stated hand- or machine-wash method, temperature and process. Do not transfer a durable shell’s settings to a thin lining or stretch blend. If the care instructions are absent, ask the manufacturer before applying a guessed treatment.

Does the finish need a particular drying process?

Some technical products specify heat to maintain their water-repellent finish; others prohibit tumble drying or ironing. Follow the exact product directions. Neither always air dry nor always heat-reactivate is a safe rule for all nylon clothing.

Put the instructions into practice

  1. Keep the item’s instructions together

Read the sewn-in label and any model-specific care guidance. Check washing, additives and drying before starting. If two instructions appear inconsistent, get clarification from the maker rather than choosing the more convenient option.

  2. Prepare fastenings and detergent

Empty pockets and arrange straps and closures as directed. Select the cleaning product and dose the maker permits. For a technical finish with a no-softener instruction, check that the product and dispenser will not introduce softener.

  3. Wash and rinse as specified

Use the permitted process without adding an extra soak or vigorous spin. Include additional rinsing if the product instructions require it. Do not apply a generic outdoor-gear routine to every item containing nylon.

  4. Complete the labelled drying method

Arrange for the specified natural drying or select the allowed tumble setting. Apply finish maintenance only when directed for that product. Check pockets, seams and any lining for remaining dampness before storing it.

Avoid these mistakes

Turn your label into a checklist

Choose the marks actually printed on your item. Keep the complete instructions together, then copy or print your checklist.
