How to wash blankets: check construction, capacity and drying
Decide whether an ordinary blanket can be washed, check appliance capacity and plan supported handling and complete drying before you begin.

Blankets: preparation and drying checklist
Tick off each check as you go. Follow your item’s complete care label and the product and machine instructions. These checks do not set washing temperatures or grant drying permission.
Ordinary blankets only. Electric, heated, weighted and specialty blankets require their exact manufacturer’s instructions; do not apply this general checklist to them.
A checked box records your progress; it does not confirm that an item is safe to wash. Progress is not stored. Your Home Cues · yourhomecues.com/laundry/blankets-care
Confirm the method before making a blanket wet
A blanket may be woven, knitted, fleece-lined or filled, and each construction changes the care task. This guide covers planning care for ordinary blankets. Electric, heated, weighted and other specialty products require their exact manufacturer’s instructions; do not apply this general washing sequence to them. For any blanket, prepare both washing and complete drying before starting.
Four decisions before the wash
Does this exact blanket permit washing?
Read the complete label, including shell, lining, filling and decorative details. Two wool blankets may have different instructions. Follow professional-cleaning requirements when stated. If identification or care instructions are missing, ask the maker or a suitable cleaner before soaking the item.
Can the appliances accept it?
Check the washer and dryer manuals for the permitted item type, program and loading limits. A blanket fitting through the door does not establish that it can move properly or be handled by that cycle. Do not transfer a capacity figure from a different machine.
How will you handle its wet weight?
Plan a supported transfer and a drying surface or appliance suitable for the item. A large wet blanket may be awkward to lift even when washing is permitted. If you cannot handle it safely, arrange appropriate help or a suitable cleaning service before starting.
Will the whole item finish drying?
Check the allowed drying method and leave enough space and time for it. Where an ordinary filled blanket is washable, follow its specific filling-care instructions. A dry shell alone does not establish dry filling, and adding heat beyond the label is not the solution.
Put the instructions into practice
1
Inspect and separate removable parts
Check seams and loose details before washing. Remove a cover only when designed to be removed and read its label separately from the inner item. A washable cover does not make its insert washable. Keep damaged or unidentified items out of the machine pending advice.
2
Prepare the permitted wash
Use a suitable detergent at its stated dose and follow the machine’s loading directions for this kind of item. Select a program that satisfies the blanket’s label. If either the product or appliance rules exclude the load, choose an appropriate alternative care service.
3
Complete the cycle and transfer with support
Follow the appliance’s instructions if it reports an unbalanced load; do not keep forcing a spin. After the machine allows safe removal, support the wet blanket during transfer. Avoid dragging it by one edge or hanging a flat-dry item by a narrow corner.
4
Dry throughout before putting away
Use the labelled method and permitted heat. Open folds or reposition only as the product and appliance directions allow. Check thick seams and any filled sections using the maker’s guidance. If dryness is uncertain, continue the allowed process or seek advice before use or storage.
Avoid these mistakes
Do not use this ordinary-blanket routine for electric, heated, weighted or other specialty products.
Do not squeeze a bulky blanket into a machine solely because the door closes.
Do not fold or store a filled blanket after checking only its outer fabric.
Turn your label into a checklist
Choose the marks actually printed on your item. Keep the complete instructions together, then copy or print your checklist.
