Activewear: preparation and drying checklist

Tick off each check as you go. Follow your item’s complete care label and the product and machine instructions. These checks do not set washing temperatures or grant drying permission.

Start when the kit comes out of the bag

Workout tops, leggings and sports bras bring together stretch fabrics, seams, elastic and sometimes removable pads or technical finishes. Unpack damp kit instead of leaving it compressed in a gym bag, then read each item’s instructions. The whole outfit may not belong in one wash.

Sort the outfit into a workable routine

Washing now or waiting for a load?

If you cannot wash promptly, spread the damp kit out to air in an appropriate place rather than leaving it balled up. This is temporary handling, not a cleaning method. Follow the maker’s washing guidance and account for how the clothing was actually used.

What could rub, snag or shed lint?

Keep delicate performance fabrics away from exposed hooks, rough denim and incompatible lint-shedding items. Check bra fastenings and any instructions for removable pads or protective bags. Do not remove sewn-in padding or dismantle a garment that was not designed for it.

Are softener or other additives restricted?

Technical fabrics often carry specific no-softener directions. Check detergent, conditioner and dryer-sheet restrictions for the exact item. A sports detergent name does not establish compatibility with every finish.

How are elastic and prints allowed to dry?

Read drying and ironing separately. A tumble option may be permitted for one piece and prohibited for another. Neither a small amount of elastane nor a quick-drying fabric allows you to ignore heat limits or restrictions around logos and bonded details.

Put the instructions into practice

  1. Unpack and prepare the pieces

Take the kit out of its bag, empty pockets and inspect closures. Follow item-specific directions for turning inside out and handling pads. Group compatible colours and care instructions, keeping rough fastenings away from vulnerable fabric.

  2. Check products before dosing

Use an appropriate detergent at its stated dose for the load and conditions. Leave out prohibited additives, including softener in automatic dispensers where relevant. Extra detergent is not a dependable fix for persistent odour and can be harder to rinse away.

  3. Match the wash to the labels

Select the permitted cycle and temperature, checking the final settings. For persistent odour, get product-specific guidance before trying another treatment; do not improvise a hotter wash or soak.

  4. Dry each piece by its own instruction

Unfold the load and use the permitted natural-drying method or dryer setting. Check elastic waistbands, lined areas and pads separately for remaining moisture. Let every part dry before packing it back into a bag or drawer.
